Artist Gerard Greene will present a pre-recorded printmaking workshop tutorial for children aged 8 – 12 years. This workshop aims to encourage children to recreate the playful patterns found in a tropical fish tank using potatoes, watercolour pencils, a biro, a small kitchen knife, poster paint and stencils. 

Children will explore a variety of printmaking methods when creating imagery of the fish, seaweed, and rocks that reside in their tropical fish tank. Artist Gerard Greene will provide a pre-recorded tutorial on how to make prints using potatoes, watercolour pencils, a biro, a small craft knife and poster paint. 

Format

Gerard will demonstrate the materials and method on a whiteboard, or large sheet of paper and on a table.

Method

Potato blocks are prepared, drawn on with watercolour pencil, or scratched on the surface with a biro.  The shapes are cut with a small kitchen knife.

The blocks are inked with poster paint and the image is made.

Card Printmaking

Shapes are drawn on the card and cut with scissors, these are inked and printed on the picture.

Stencils

Shapes are cut with a scissors and sponge used to make the stencils.

The picture is built up with the different print methods.

Pattern Making

The potato shapes, card shapes, and stencils are used to make a pattern on a separate sheet of paper.

Materials Required

Potatoes, Watercolour pencil, Biro, Small kitchen knife, a good pair of scissors,

Poster paint various colours; Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, Brown. PVA glue. Cartridge paper, Coloured paper

Pencils, Paint Brushes, Newspaper, Cloths, Small plates, 

 

Note for Parents:
A parent/ guardian must be present to ensure the safety of the children using the Potato and Card Printmaking online tutorial. Parents will be required to maintain adequate supervision of their children while they are working on their Potato and Card Printmaking. Parents’ help may be needed with some children in preparing crafts, particularly when they need to use scissors/small kitchen knife.
