ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Role

The role of a Caretaker will be required for all amenities/venues under the management of Athlone Arts & Tourism Ltd. This is a multi faceted role which will require the successful candidate to undertake a range of duties that include caretaking, maintenance, security and technical support aspects.

Duties

  • To ensure the maintenance and upkeep of Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, Luan Gallery and Abbey Road Studios – both interior and exterior caretaking - under the control and direction of Athlone Arts & Tourism Manager, or as delegated.
  • To promote a good image of Athlone Arts & Tourism and ensure the delivery of a quality and courteous service to the public, volunteers and staff.
  • To assist & participate in the coordination and supervision of contractors and service providers including: 
    • All maintenance contractors such as cleaners, lifts, fire and safety, security, office and IT, etc.
  • To assist & participate in the maintenance, cleaning, upkeep and operation of
    • The computerised building management systems governing lighting, ventilation and heating, audio/visual equipment etc.
    • Staff canteens/tea stations/toilet facilities.
    • Shared facilities, e.g. copiers, printers, drinks machine, notice boards and 
    • Office & furniture procurement, installation, layouts & modifications
  • To assist with the organisations postal requirements and arrangements
  • To assist with the organisations banking requirements and arrangements
  • To carry out day-to-day repairs & maintenance – electrical, plumbing and carpentry based, e.g. lighting replacement, clean-ups, set ups etc. and recording of same
  • Grounds maintenance – security, monitoring, cleaning, litter picking, weeding, grass cutting, power washing, etc
  •  To be responsible for the daily security of the building including - public access, CCTV systems, the custody of keys, monitoring any anti-social behaviour, loitering etc.
  • To be available to attend to any emergency work that may arise outside of normal working hours. To respond to queries/calls from An Garda Siochana, Monitoring Service providers or any other such persons/organisations.
  • Assistance with general porter duties
  • Assistance with art handling and exhibition hanging and installation – both art and heritage based - including the movement and storage of artworks, artefacts, promotional items, materials, signage etc. As required assisting with logistics, transportation, building access, storage, pick-ups etc. This may involve movement between a buildings associated with Athlone Arts & Tourism.
  •  To supervise the store areas in all assigned buildings.
  • To assist in the care and maintenance of exhibits, artefacts, art works and any other such items associated with Athlone Arts & Tourism as directed by the Manager
  • To ensure compliance of the Health & Safety requirements of appropriate authorities.
  • To arrange the supply of materials necessary for maintenance or repair work and to keep appropriate records of same.
  • To create and maintain any records required by the Manager – Athlone Arts & Tourism Ltd.
  • The person employed shall be required to drive a car in the course of his/her duties and should possess a clean driving licence.
  • To co-operate with and use any new technology/equipment and communication systems.
  • To carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the Management of Athlone Arts & Tourism.

 

The above duties outline the main functions and responsibilities of the post of seasonal part time caretaker and may be subject to review in the future.

Conditions

An hourly rate of €10 will apply with a varied number of hours per week based on a roster system. Applicants must have the flexibility to work hours in line with the seasonal and operational considerations of the attractions/facilities. A standby roster arrangement will be operated. Applicants will be required to work weekends and evening events. Full terms and conditions will be provided with contracts at time of appointment. Applicants must be flexible with both their time and approach to work and be comfortable working across three distinct venues carrying out a variety of tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Character

Candidates shall be of good character.

Health

Candidates shall be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Education/experience

Necessary:

  • A high standard of education or equivalent standard of work experience to enable effective and efficient role fulfilment.
  • Have good time management, organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Have the capacity to contribute to and work well as part of a team.
  • Hold a current clean Category B driving licence and have the use of a car. Have the ability to use initiative and judgement.
  • Be honest, dedicated and hard working.
  • Be punctual and capable of working within strict time frames to achieve targets and capable of completing tasks in a timely fashion to a high standard.
  • Work in a tidy and clean manner, conscious of waste management and being ‘green’
  • Always strive to work to the highest possible standard

Desirable:

  • A working knowledge or experience of:
    • building maintenance
    • building regulations
    • electrical and mechanical systems
    • computer based systems
    • safety, health and welfare at work
    •  computer skills
