Cultural Assistant — Luan Gallery

Athlone Arts & Tourism, a company established by Westmeath County Council operates Luan Gallery, Athlone Castle Visitor Centre and Abbey Road Artists’ Studios. These sites managed by Athlone Arts and Tourism Ltd are of major significance to the cultural landscape of Athlone and this region. 

Athlone Arts & Tourism is seeking to appoint a Cultural Assistant based at Luan Gallery on a fixed term two year contract under the JobsPlus incentive from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (Applicants may check their eligibility on: The Cultural Assistant will assist with the delivery, administration and promotion of the activities and exhibitions primarily of the gallery and its sister venue: Abbey Road Artists’ Studios. 

Operating as the midlands municipal visual art gallery, Luan Gallery promotes visual art viewing, engagement and learning. Luan Gallery does not house a permanent collection and turns over exhibitions approximately every two months, presenting an exciting and diverse annual visual art and education programme. 

Luan Gallery promotes an active and varied exhibitions programme representing works in an assortment of mediums by artists based both nationally and internationally. While a portion of the programme is dedicated to showcasing artistic talents from the midlands region, an equal emphasis is put on the importance of bringing work of national and international focus to the local audience. 


A Cultural Assistant is required to work under the management of Athlone Arts & Tourism and will be primarily located at the gallery site. The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day delivery of customer service and administration duties.

  2. Wage: €10.75 per hour Mon to Sat and €11.82 per hour on Sun
  3. Contract: Full-time fixed term position of 24 months with a 6 weeks probationary period.
  4. Responsible To: Athlone Arts & Tourism Ltd.
  5. Reporting To: The Management of Athlone Arts & Tourism Ltd.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a broad range of duties including but not confined to the following;

  • Support the Visual Art Coordinator and gallery management with gallery and studios related administration
  • Complete front of house and customer service duties such as welcoming visitors, dealing with telephone queries, invigilation, sales of artwork, bookings, ticketing, recording and cash handling as required
  • Assist with the liaison and administration of Abbey Road Artists’ Studios residencies, educational activities and events
  • Assist with the administration and delivery of promotional activities for the facilities including, direct mailing, ezines, cold calling.
  • Maintain organisation databases, mailing lists and records.
  • Visually record organisation events and exhibitions through use of photography and/or videography.
  • Marketing: social media and marketing effort will be required.
  • Assist with the booking, delivery, organisation and administration and coordination of guided tours and workshops in the Gallery and Studios.
  • Assist in the administration and filing of visual archives of exhibitions and events across venues.
  • Develop relationships with artists, agents, facilitators, groups, and other networks.
  • Communicate with members of the public, direct queries and complaints.
  • Complete all administrative and clerical duties as assigned such as gathering data on visitors, developing databases, generating reports, managing the booking system, typing and issuing correspondence etc will be required
  • Retail: café and gift shop, including till operations, cash handling, merchandising, stocktaking and other retail activities as directed by senior staff and management.
  • Assist with the recruitment and contracting of artists and facilitators for educational programmes across all facilities
  • To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the management team.

The Cultural Assistant must have a flexible approach to work, and be adaptable to carry out duties in other facilities associated with Athlone Arts & Tourism as required by the Manager. The above duties outline the main functions and responsibilities of the post of Cultural Assistant and may be subject to review in the future.

Conditions of Employment

  • The Cultural Assistant will be employed on the basis of a fixed term contract for a period of 24 months with an initial probationary period of 6 weeks and will be subject to one month’s notice in writing on either side.

  • Duty at weekends and at evenings (as required) will be an integral part of the working week i.e. the position has a 32.5 hour over 7 days responsibility
  • Applicants must have the flexibility to work hours in line with the seasonal and operational considerations of the facilities
  • A standby roster arrangement will be operated
  • The successful candidate will work in a variety of environments including: gallery reception, in an office in the gallery, in the studios, in education/multifunction rooms and occasionally off-site.
  • Physical demands of the role include standing, walking, delivering guided tours, delivering workshops, art handling and carrying objects.
  • Applicants must be flexible with both their time and approach to work and be comfortable working across three distinct venues carrying out a variety of tasks.
  • Full terms and conditions will be provided with contract at time of appointment.


  1. Character
    Candidates shall be of good character.

    Candidates shall be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

  3. The position is subject to the receipt of satisfactory Garda Vetting and references.

  4. Education/Experience


  • Previous experience in customer service.
  • A good basic knowledge of Athlone and the Midland’s art and heritage offerings, in particular the attractions and facilities associated with Athlone Arts & Tourism.
  • Computer skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.
  • Highly organised and efficient worker.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Passionate about visual art and cultural heritage and an interest in education and outreach.
  • Knowledgeable about Irish art and working in a gallery context.
  • The ability to provide guided tours of and around all facilities associated with Athlone Arts & Tourism
  • Previous experience with till operation.
  • The ability to manage ticketing, reporting and cash handling procedures.
  • The capacity to interact effectively with people from a broad range of sectors and groups
  • The ability to manage and grow visitor bookings, over the phone and by direct contact with customers and others from the arts & heritage sector.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good copywriting skills.
  • The capacity to work on own initiative and to contribute well in a team based environment.
  • Desire to work with schools and community organisations of all ages and interests.
  • The capacity and passion for developing and delivering educational or cultural programmes and events to a variety of groups (children, older people, families, etc.).
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to work with people from different backgrounds, communities, traditions, etc.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Flexibility.


  • Past Gallery/Heritage Museum experience 
  • Third Level Art Education desirable
  • Experience working with schools and/or community organisations
  • Experience responding to multiple queries from the public (phone, email and other)
  • The capacity to lead/guide tour and educational groups
  • An interest in education and developing resources for teachers and groups
  • The capacity to assist in developing and/or delivering education or cultural programmes/events to a variety of groups (children, older people, families, etc.)
  • Experience with database management and development
  • Experience online marketing and understanding of social media
  • Experience with writing press material
  • Experience with the logistics of exhibition installation and turnovers
  • Experience with managing events and volunteers
  • Experience responding to multiple queries from the public (phone, email and other)


Selection shall be by means of a competition based on an interview conducted by or on behalf of Athlone Arts & Tourism Ltd.
