On the 15th November 2019, Athlone Castle, in association with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will proudly present ‘Medals of Honour’ – a temporary exhibition dedicated to the display of Irish war memorabilia under the remit of The Decade of Centenaries. The Decade of Centenaries programme aims to commemorate each step that Ireland took between 1912 and 1922 in a tolerant, inclusive and respectful way.

The period from 1912 to 1922 was one of the most eventful in Ireland’s history. From the campaign for Home Rule, through World War One and the Easter Rising of 1916 to the foundation of the Free State, this certainly was a decade of great change.

In response to this decade of commemorations, Athlone Castle will display war memorabilia in a temporary exhibition in the environs of the historic Castle Keep. A significant contribution to this exhibition is being made by Mr. Thomas Evans, ex Irish Army Veteran and current Athlone Castle Volunteer, who has amassed a vast array of memorabilia dedicated to men and women who fought bravely and valiantly for their country.

Mr. Evans has kindly loaned, for the use in this exhibition, personal artefacts including medals, flags, newspaper reports and other such memorabilia, which all share an historic value to this country.  Highlights of this exhibition will include medals of the First World War period and medals awarded posthumously to persons who took part in 1916 and during the War of Independence, 1919-1921

The official opening of the exhibition will take place at 4.30pm on Friday the 15th of November with a contribution from Athlone Castle Visitor Centre Cultural Assistant, David Landers.

This temporary exhibition will run from the 15th November until the 8th December in the Keep of Athlone Castle.
